Photo: Pale cross (I)This is a photo I took late at night in the cemetary at the top of Wellington city centre. A beautiful and haunting place, even after they put the road through the middle of it. The highlight was created by a small LED torch I happened to be carrying. By the way, I'm posting this photo from my new Flickr account, which I'll be using to share just my best work. My old account will still be in place, and you can follow this for my work-in-progress shots. (I don't know whether having two Flickr accounts is sensible or practical, but I guess I'll find out over the next couple of months.) Posted by jamesr at 10:53 AM
Photo: Desert fingers (II)Flying out to Europe took me over central Australia in the middle of a sunny day. Whlie taking photos through the window of a plane is always fraught, the ever-changing landscape proved irresitable... Posted by jamesr at 03:25 PM
Photo: Crescent (II)As you can see, I'm enjoying taking these stitched-together photos. It certainly provides a different view of the South Beach art deco architecture in Miami... Posted by jamesr at 10:43 AM
Photo: The CarlyleI'm currently in Miami, speaking at the IA Summit. It's been great to finally get some sun, after rain in Sydney for so long. This is a stitching of the art deco waterfront along South Beach. These photos are a lot of fun to take, although it does leave my laptop crunching numbers for several hours... Photo: Space invader in ParisI was very pleased to find a space invader when I was recently in Paris. Just walking around the street, and there it was, perched on a wall in a nondescript location. Very exciting! What is all this about? There is an artist called "Invader" who puts up these novel forms of grafitti, not just throughout Paris, but internationally. You can read more about him on Wikipedia. Posted by jamesr at 08:50 AM
Photo: Angled lines on Mount RigiI'm going to start blogging one of my photos each weekend, as part of a committment to focus more on non-work activities. If I'm travelling, I'll select one of the photos taken in the previous week. Between trips, I'll choose on of the 3000+ photos I have up on Flickr. (I'll mark all these blog entries with "Photo" in the title, so you can skip over them if they aren't of interest.) This photo was taken at the top of Mount Rigi, about an hour away from Zurich in Switzerland. This was the venue for the Stimmt Intranet Innovation Days event which I was a keynote speaker at. Beyond being a superb event with an extremely high level of interaction, it gave me an enjoyable opportunity to trudge through the freezing snow (and fog) in search of the perfect picture... Photo: Brooklyn BridgeThis is probably the best of my recent NY photos. You'll want to click through to Flickr, choose "All sizes", and see it nice and large to get the full effect... Posted by jamesr at 05:39 AM
Sunset behind West Pier (VII)Last week I was in London, mostly working. I did get a chance to to have a day trip to Brighton, and there was superb weather (sunny and warm!). Spent time walking the waterfront, and enjoyed this sunset behind the remains of the West Pier. Posted by jamesr at 08:11 PM
Regarding Simmer on the BayJust a quick followup to my earlier post on my photography exhibition. During the exhibition, there was a lot of interest in the gallery space "Simmer on the Bay", which is certainly a magnificent location. Was I happy with the space? Yes. Would I recommend dealing with the owners, or hiring the space? No, absolutely not. Enough said. Posted by jamesr at 02:27 PM

Examining the photosThe recent exhibition of my photography was a hugely enjoyable experience, with many very favourable comments. Thanks to all who attended the exhibition, and even if you didn't make it, the full set of photos have now been uploaded to the exhibition website. A good number of the photos were sold, but with limited edition prints of 20, there are still copies available for all photos. Drop me a line if you'd like to purchase any mounted prints, or unframed prints for that matter. Posted by jamesr at 10:43 PM
Not too late to see my photographyJust a quick note to say that it's not too late to see my photography exhibition (along with Cairo's wonderful paintings). The exhibition is open all weekend, 9am - 5pm. There's been a lot of very positive feedback, so that's very pleasing. Posted by jamesr at 09:42 PM

Rich stoneworkThe Ali Ben Youssef Madersa is a recently restored Islamic school in Marrakech. The richness of the stonework and woodwork is breathtaking, and it must've been an inspiring place to learn... Posted by jamesr at 10:46 PM
North Window through the South Window
This is one of the classic views in Arches National Park. It involved rising pre-dawn, and shivering through sub-zero temperatures after clambering up onto a narrow platform of rock. But the view was worth it! Posted by jamesr at 09:58 AM
Bryce panorama (I)After the IA Summit, I went on the three-day road trip to visit some of the most spectacular national parks in Utah. I was hit by a sudden snowstorm driving into Bryce, but when I arrived at the lookout the clouds parted. The sun shining onto this landscape was one of the most remarkable sights I've ever seen. (You'll want to view this panorama very, very big.) Posted by jamesr at 05:15 PM
Leaving Las Vegas
I've been in Las Vegas for the last 5 days for the IA Summit. It's a mad, bizarre place, packed with people, slot machines and neon lights. The sensory overload frankly makes it hard to sleep at night, so I'm looking forward to heading out for some sightseeing in the desert tomorrow... Posted by jamesr at 03:56 PM
Panorama: Sydney University main hall
Photo stitching can be a lot of fun! Here's one of the experimental photos I took this morning, of the Sydney University quadrangle and great hall. I think it worked out pretty well... Posted by jamesr at 04:21 PM
Shadows in motionThis is taken at the Sydney Opera House late in the afternoon. It's one of the photos that comes about from a chance observation, and being in the right place and the right time. Posted by jamesr at 03:00 PM
Blue Mountains panoramaThis is another panorama of the Blue Mountains, stitched together from half a dozen images. The clouds certainly increase the level of interest, and it looks good at a larger size (click on the image to be taken through to Flickr and then choose "all sizes"). Posted by jamesr at 12:17 PM
Panorama of the Megalong Valley at sunset
I spent a late afternoon in the Blue Mountains over the break, just spending some time working with my camera. Of the shots taken, I think the panoramas probably turned out the best, including this one. (This is consists of about four images stitched together.) Posted by jamesr at 06:13 PM
Party out the backThis time of year in Sydney, the increasingly warm weather brings out the party spirit. Down the road from me, an elegantly-lettered sign invited guests back to the patio at the end of a long summer day. Posted by jamesr at 08:00 PM
Panorama of Trocadero at night
The first night I arrived in Paris I scaled the heights of the Eiffel Tower to look out across the city. While the Eiffel Tower is an intoxicating sight, so are the views of Paris at night. This particular panorama focuses on the Palais du Trocadero, which certainly stands out with its night-time lighting... Posted by jamesr at 08:43 PM
Panorama: gargoyle looking out across Paris
This trip I had some fun taking lots of photos, stitching them into big panoramas. This is one of my favourites, of a gargoyle on Notre Dame looking out across a cloudy city. (You'll need to zoom is to see all the lovely details.) Posted by jamesr at 10:44 PM
Stained glass detailHaving just spent a long weekend in Paris as part of my London trip, I can safely say what many already know: Paris is a beautiful city! This is detail from one of the magnificent stained glass windows in Notre Dame. Still uploading the rest of the photos from the weekend... Posted by jamesr at 12:58 AM
Moon over the pre-dawn beachI recently had a long weekend away, up the coast at Forster. It's a lovely area, and my two 4:30am starts were rewarded with a number of beautiful pre-dawn coastal photos. This one is entirely free of Photoshopping (I promise!), and the red is actually the product of nearby lighting, which is very striking against the deep blue sky... Posted by jamesr at 09:22 PM
