Many intranets aim to be the starting point for employees to get things done and complete tasks. Boehringer Ingelheim’s intranet INSITE has succeeded to an extraordinary degree, launching an excellent task-based dashboard based on Viva Connections. The dashboard, available on the homepage, enables employees to view data and complete common transactions involving multiple enterprise systems, without even having to leave the intranet.

Global pharmaceutical firm Boehringer Ingelheim is the worthy winner of the Platinum Award in the 2026 Intranet & Digital Workplace Awards from Step Two. Each year the Platinum award goes to the entry that collectively achieves the highest score across the judges.

The dashboard demonstrates both strategic thinking and strong execution. Awards judge Susan Hanley described the dashboard as a “massively impressive solution that stands out because of the incredible integration that this team pulled off… the goal wasn’t just another intranet but a personalised entry point for daily tasks. Their task-based dashboard reflects what every organisation wants to do, but few are able to pull off.”

A fragmented digital employee experience

Boehringer Ingelheim’s heritage stretches back to 1885 and today is Germany’s largest pharma company, employing more than 50,000 employees across over 50 countries with a diverse workforce that also consists of an additional 15,000 external workers.

Prior to the launch of the new intranet, Boehringer Ingelheim’s digital workplace had also grown more complex, leading to a fragmented digital employee experience (DEX). It was hard to find information while communication was not always as effective as it should be.  Employees relied on a mixture of inconsistent sites and channels, often with duplicated content, which were not optimised for mobile devices, despite a large frontline workforce.

More specifically, employees had to rely on a wide range of tools and systems to manage approvals, complete tasks and access documents. Starting each day meant navigating systems rather than focusing on meaningful work.

A vision for DEX

One of the most impressive aspects of the new intranet is the solid thinking and vision that has shaped INSITE and its task dashboard. The company has a “One Employee Experience (OEE)” strategy that amongst other things, aims to create a seamless, integrated, and personalised working environment that simplifies daily work, accelerates access to information, and measurably improves productivity.

The team brought this vision to life in an intranet that aims to “Give every employee one personalised entry point to complete daily tasks and access relevant company information – anytime, anywhere, on any device.”

More specifically, the team wanted to move the “line of visibility” to different applications. Instead of a myriad of individual user interactions across different systems with inconsistent interfaces, the new single front end is now INSITE. From here, APIs feed data from constituent applications and users can complete transactions without having recall the name of different IT systems, reducing complexity and fragementation, while increasing digital employee experience.

Dashboard cards

On the dashboard users access a number of clearly defined dashboard cards (widgets), covering task such as approvals, resources, training, travel, lunch plans, and additional recurring activities.

These cards connect directly to enterprise systems such as SAP (SuccessFactors, Concur, Ariba), InvoiceTrack, ServiceNow, DocuSign, Sodexo, Kamasys, and Veeva, allowing employees to act immediately from one central place. The dashboard is also available on desktop, mobile, and tablet, allowing users to accomplish common daily tasks from any device.

Overall, the task dashboard is helping to drive good adoption across INSITE with around 36,000 unique users daily and 94 percent returning users.  An increased demand for new cards on the Dashboard also reflects the value it brings to employees. For example, users have asked about the possibility of using the Dashboard to record working time easily, and to get reminders on required actions for Boehringer Ingelheim’s annual employee development plan.
