NEXTDC: Uplifting skills to support digital transformation
Data centre operator, NEXTDC, has introduced a competency-based approach to the roll-out and adoption of digital tools, like Microsoft Teams, as part of an overall approach to digital transformation. Applying the “waves” methodology, the team has defined and supported skills based around business scenarios.
Reflected in two PoCs, the approach involves defining specific digital skills for different levels, recognising different learning methods, and providing a high-touch support and roll-out process based around several workshops for each team. A survey-based approach has been applied to assess digital skills in order to identify gaps, design training and track progress.
The team has also introduced robust digital workplace governance, including template-based site provisioning. The approach has proved successful, providing solid foundations to embed digital tools in ways of working.

- The change management and high touch support process for working with different teams is very well done.
- There is some strong work around digital workplace governance.
- We like the healthy long-term thinking involved in this entire project, recognising it as a complex, multi-year project, building on what has gone before.
- From the PoCs through to the recognition of modes of learning, the team has remained user-focused throughout.
