Ashurst: Rolling out GenAI tools to a global workforce

Global law firm, Ashurst, has rolled out the Harvey AI platform to all partners and staff across 31 offices. This is one of the earliest examples of an AI implementation of this scale in the legal industry. The roll-out follows initial trials with different GenAI tools as well as a comprehensive pilot with Harvey. In both cases the firm has sought to take a research-driven approach to the launch.

Ashurst has also invested in a comprehensive approach to change management in order to drive adoption and minimise risk. Tactics include a targeted learning program, a set of learning resources available via the intranet, a champions network, a suite of governance assets, and a focus on relatable use cases.

The these efforts have resulted in high levels of adoption, an increased confidence from people using AI, and multiple examples of time-savings across a number of different use cases. The project has also contributed to the firm’s digital transformation.

Why this won a Silver award

  • This is a pioneering and ambitious global roll-out of an AI platform within a law firm, unusually extending to all staff.
  • We love how this has taken a data-driven and iterative approach to the roll-out, featuring user research and comprehensive pilots.
  • There is a strong focus on use cases and the practical application of the tool.
  • The staged learning approach is well-thought-through and we like how access is tied to attending an AI fundamentals course.
  • The change and support model seems very effective, especially with the use of champions and “inspiration pages”, as support moves to a decentralised approach.
  • There are some very useful governance assets, including resources to support conversations with clients.
  • The comprehensive roll-out has clearly led to high levels of adoption, increased confidence, and time savings.
  • This is an excellent cross-functional project with contributions from multiple teams.
