The 2018 Intranet and Digital Workplace Awards have uncovered a tremendous diversity of ideas and approaches, from around the globe. These serve to inspire other teams, and to show what really can be done.
One question we get asked every year, however, is: what technology platforms did the winners use?
While there’s a lot more to a winning solution that the underlying platform, it’s nonetheless a practical question that intranet teams (and the stakeholders they report to) want to know.
So, here is the answer:
What 2018 Award winners used

|3M||Implementing a personalised global intranet||Office 365|
|Ascham||Engaging a school community via the intranet||Elcom CMS|

What can we learn from this?
It’s clear from these winners that Office 365 is rapidly becoming the dominant platform for intranets. That being said, when diving into the details of each Office 365-based winner, many different real world approaches have been taken. Some have used intranet-in-a-box solutions that sit on Office 365, while others have custom-developed their solution to a small or large degree.
More broadly, the digital workplace is still far from a one-horse race. Web content management systems still have a lot to offer, as do purely collaborative solutions and standalone intranet-in-a-box products. The delivery of mobile solutions is still in its early days, despite how long smartphones have been around for, and most of the winning mobile solutions remain custom-developed.
As ever, it’s not the platform that delivers success, it’s what you do with it. Targeting real business needs and delivering concrete benefits is the only clear path to digital workplace success. Make the most of what the platform offers, and then push the limits of what’s possible!
