Digital transformation is underway, but it’s all a question of timing.
Within organisations, disruptive change has become a reality. Many of the consumer-oriented technologies are equally applicable in a business setting, and entirely new enterprise-oriented ideas are being explored.
Business leaders, however, find it hard to judge which of these technologies are hype, and which are a transformative reality.
To help with this, Step Two produces a yearly Digital Workplace Radar to help teams and businesses to understand what changes are happening right now, and which ones are still in the distant future.
Now in its fourth year, patterns are starting to emerge, of technologies that seem to be forever circling, while others that are skipping the queue to land in a hurry.

A few standouts for 2019
Firstly, let’s start with the things that haven’t changed compared to 2018:
- Bots are still circling, and AI is still in flight. While there’s a lot of energy devoted to these fields, the reality is that bots are still ‘coming soon’ for most organisations and should be planned for but not jumped on immediately. Likewise, AI is still in the conceptual phase beyond some early success stories.
- Digital workplace as a concept and strategy continues to grow in strength, and should be put on the to-do list for 2019 (if it’s not there already!).
Some of what has changed compared to 2018:
- Microsoft Teams is eating the enterprise, with its rapid organic growth overwhelming broader Office 365 planning. Let’s all hold on for the ride!
- Intranets have defied the nay-sayers and delivering a truly modern intranet is on the priority list for vendors and customers alike.
