Intranet design + redesign (Sydney, 25 March 2010)

Deliver a best practice intranet that is intuitive and usable for staff

If the intranet isn’t easy to use, there’s little point in having one! To design (or redesign) an intranet, we need to put staff first, and follow a "user-centred design" approach. This workshop outlines this best practice methodology and provides many examples.

Taking a user-centred design approach to the intranet gives teams a range of practical usability techniques that get beyond opinions and arguments.

Techniques include card sorting, tree testing, and usability testing. These will all be covered during this workshop. Hands-on activities with a number of these key techniques, such as card sorting, ensure you will walk away with practical skills that can be immediately put into practice. You’ll also receive detailed how-to guides on intranet design techniques.

This workshop will answer many common questions, including:

  • What should go on the intranet home page?
  • How to determine the right structure and navigation?
  • How important is the look and feel of the intranet?
  • What designs can really help staff find what they need?
  • What techniques will help to deliver a great intranet?

One of the greatest challenges for intranet teams is how hard it is to see other intranets, and to uncover design ideas. The workshop will share many examples, as well as screenshots of good designs. This will give teams a wealth of ideas to draw upon when designing their intranets.

Workshop agenda

Topics covered during the day include:

  • Why staff use the intranet
  • Intranet design + redesign methodology
  • Principles for designing an intranet that works
  • Key usability, information architecture (IA) and user-centred design techniques
  • What should go on the home page
  • Screenshots and examples

Our promise in delivering this workshop

If there is a clear principle to follow, we’ll state it ("the answer")

Otherwise, we’ll provide a clear methodology to follow ("how to work out the answer")

In some cases, there may be more than one solution, and we’ll talk them through ("the options")

We’ll always provide pragmatic advice, based on what has worked for real intranet teams
