In this one-day workshop you will learn the fundamental principles of information architecture (IA), as well as practical techniques that can be used on a wide range of projects. IA provides a rich toolbox of techniques and frameworks to ensure that websites and intranets are structured in a way that makes sense to users. At the end of the day you will be ready to tackle the information architecture, navigation and page layouts for a small to medium site or part of a larger site. During the workshop, you will learn:
Who is this workshop for? When redesigning (or designing) a website or intranet, it is critical that users be able to easily find what they want on the new site. This does not happen by chance. Best practice information architecture techniques should be followed to ensure that the desired project outcomes are actually achieved. IA should therefore be core knowledge for all web and intranet teams. This workshop provides the foundation for building these skills in-house within organisations. It also provides the knowledge required to better manage consultants or contractors who have been engaged to conduct this work on the site. Please note, this is a introductory workshop designed to build core skills, and is not suitable for intermediate or experienced practitioners. Practical techniquesThis workshop is designed to be immediately valuable to real-world website and intranet projects. Hands-on sessions give direct exposure to a range of practical techniques, along with a framework to use these insights effectively. Card sorting: The most widely used information architecture technique, designed to give insight into how users think about the information on a site. This workshop will provide insight into the less widely understood strengths and weaknesses of this technique, and will ensure that it is used effectively in all circumstances. Card-based classification evaluation: This technique provides a uniquely rapid way of testing a draft site structure, with real users attempting to complete actual tasks. This identifies areas of weakness in the draft design, allowing for revisions to be easily made early in the redesign process. What others have said"Excellent course and very timely for me. About the Essentials SeriesThe Step Two Essentials Series of workshops are designed to provide hands-on experience with practical techniques and methodologies. They are run regularly to allow organisations to build up their in-house skills in key areas, primarily relating to usability and information architecture. These workshops are different to those run by generic training or conference companies. We don't try to be all things to all people. Instead, we specialise in a small number of related areas, and share our depth of experience in all the workshops we run. All workshops are run by one of our senior consultants, all of whom hold nationally accredited training qualifications. Our events are designed to get the best possible outcomes for participants. It isn't just us talking at the front of the room and 'death by Powerpoint'. Relevant and practical activities are used to explore key techniques and issues. All participants are encouraged to ask questions, and to shape the agenda to fit their specific requirements. We stand by the quality of our workshops, and are constantly improving and enhancing how we deliver them. We are confident that these workshops will provide real value to your team, and to your organisation. About the presenter
