It is never easy juggling the many tasks involved in maintaining and growing intranets. This workshop introduces a new model for managing intranets: the Intranet Hive.

Dividing intranet tasks into six segments, this model has been developed by Step Two Designs to help intranet teams assess how they are going, and to identify missing activities.

Cairo Walker will facilitate an exploration of this new model, as well providing practical insight into many aspects of intranet management.

Managing an intranet is hard, and it is easy to miss even key aspects of ongoing site management. This workshop shares a new model of intranet management: the Intranet Hive. Developed by Step Two Designs to support the on-going management of intranets, the Intranet Hive covers six key areas:

  • intranet strategy
  • design
  • content
  • change & communications
  • technology
  • intranet team

The Intranet Hive provides a self-assessment and supporting 'how-tos' for intranet teams, allowing them to manage with confidence. There are 36 core activities that span the work that intranet teams grapple with on a daily basis, including:

  • refining intranet governance
  • reviewing user-centered design techniques
  • formalising intranet authoring
  • ensuring visibility to senior managers
  • improving intranet tools
  • building and maintaining a customer service ethic

The Intranet Hive pulls together more than 60 years worth of collective experience from global and local leaders in the intranet, content management, search and usability fields.

This one day workshop provides intranet teams with an opportunity to focus exclusively on the management of the intranet.

Topics covered during the day:

  • the Intranet Hive methodology encompassing intranet strategy, design, content, change and communications, technology and intranet team
  • practical techniques for self-assessment and on-going management
  • model of intranet evolution to escape the 'tyrannical redesign loop'
  • leading successful intranets and gaining management support
  • working effectively between technical and business teams

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is designed for intranet teams, whether novice or experienced. Recognising that it is never easy to 'keep all the balls in the air', the Intranet Hive simplifies ongoing intranet management and planning.

This workshop is particularly suited to teams looking to assess their current management practices, and to 'benchmark' themselves against a comprehensive checklist of intranet tasks.

This workshop also provide an opportunity for teams to discuss key intranet topics, and to uncover new approaches.

Introducing the Intranet Hive

Intranet HiveThe Intranet Hive and the accompanying heuristics are unique to Step Two Designs, and are designed to give intranet teams a new way of managing and growing their sites.

The methodology recognises that there are many facets to running an intranet and it defines 36 core activities across six segments:

  • intranet strategy
  • design
  • content
  • change & communications
  • technology
  • intranet team

The process starts with identifying current strengths and weaknesses and selecting activities to maximise the effectiveness of the intranet (and the intranet team). Using a simple scoring method, teams working through the heuristics arrive at a overall evaluation of their current intranet activities. Gaps within individual areas are also identified.

This workshop provides an opportunity to understand the specifics behind each of the areas. Participants will then be ready to confidently make use of the model when they get back to their organisations.

The Intranet Hive then provides intranet teams with an ongoing way of tracking intranet activities, ensuring that no areas are being missed. Limited resources are therefore targeted to the areas that matter the most.

About the Leadership Series

About the presenter

[Cairo Walker]

Cairo Walker is a senior consultant at Step Two, and has worked with many organisations in both the public and private sectors, in a consulting and mentoring roles.

Cairo's expertise has seen her deliver keynote speeches and workshops across Asia-Pacific and consult to global organizations such as Dyno Nobel (USA, Canada, Australia), Caltex, McKesson (USA, Asia-Pacific), Fonterra (global in over 50 countries) and many others. In addition to these global companies Cairo has an impressive local track record designing successful enterprise-wide initiatives and mentoring companies through implementation within Australia.

As a former hands-on intranet manager, Cairo is keenly aware of the challenges involved in running an intranet. It is this in-depth understanding that led to the creation of the Intranet Hive, and this workshop.
