i appliciate your efforts in providing information especially on records mgt much as most institutions here in Uganda have not yet realized the importance of Records keeping
in addition to the above, there is a conflict between the records managers and information Officers in the country because of the overwrapping structure of Government.hope this msg will make stakeholders’ attitudes change

Records management system is not fully recognised worldwide mainly becouse there is no Head at the top in the public service to oversee our grievances.Nor considering proper grading structure,advancement,upgrading and policies.

Mr James,

For my is a pleasure to read your article, becuase in our country the national law of Records is based on the records schedule retention and is not open to the possibilities for that the public institutions can use the filing clasification system according or focused to the bussines core process. For my, this practice is much more efectivy specially when the end users needs to classify the records that diary generate from the office, but my question is, how could be do it for change this paradigm in my country?

Great article James,

The suggestion to ‘make it invisible’ is excellent advice. Users will always take the path of least resistance. Besides, software should make our lives easier, not find new ways to make our working lives harder.

In the face of so many ways to create a document and so many places to save it, getting out of the users way while maintaining a semblance of control is often hard to achieve.

Any suggestions on increasing the transparency of your ERMS design?

@Fundi, I definitely wouldn’t do a survey. It’s going to be practically impossible to ask meaningful questions, particularly around a topic such as recordkeeping.

Instead, I would go out and spend time with staff, to understand their current practices around electronic documents and bits of paper. Seek out a “point of pain” that currently exists, and explore how it can be addressed.

PS. what kind of organisation do you work for?

That’s exactly what I needed. I am at that stage where u are not sure if the system will ever be used.If I want to conduct a survey on the users experience what sort of questions can I ask them? Any questionaires available for that purpose?
