@Baiba, we'd definitely recommend that organisations implement commenting on intranet news, as it's a simple first step towards a more social intranet (and a more open organisation). We've written a full article on this topic:

Hi, thanks for all the info! I know this is an older post, but still find it very useful. I wondered if any of you can give me any tips on how to make employees to comment more on news stories? Or what is your experience with commenting? I used to work for one organisation where it was big, but I guess it was due to anonymity. The company I work for at the moment, has a sign-in system, which means that the name appears when comment is posted, therefore we don't see any comments at all. In my previous job I found it to be a good place for employees to ask sensitive questions. What are your thoughts?

You can find a case study here showing examples of how a university used employee screensavers with embedded hyperlinks to promote 'what's new'intranet content and apps:

Hi,
I may have missed this - but I would also say that branding your intranet portal (or re-branding your portal) to give it a tru company identity is really important. If you are using SharePoint as your platform then there are some great 3rd party vendors. It would be worth checking out notebook Styles as they have full range of SharePoint themes. You can also tell them the HEX or RGB codes for your company colours and they will create a custom theme in a matter of days. Worth a look !!

Our intranet is used by everyone and everyday for office management purposes. But people are still bored of the usual stuff they see everyday.

Your ideas will help us revive their interest in the application. Thanks for sharing!
