I may have missed this – but I would also say that branding your intranet portal (or re-branding your portal) to give it a tru company identity is really important. If you are using SharePoint as your platform then there are some great 3rd party vendors. It would be worth checking out notebook Styles as they have full range of SharePoint themes. You can also tell them the HEX or RGB codes for your company colours and they will create a custom theme in a matter of days. Worth a look !!

@Jenni, in this age of “user generated content”, these are all great ways of involving staff. Not only do they help to build awareness about the intranet, but they help to build a sense of community, something that is very important at a Council (and elsewhere!). Thanks for sharing!

Ideas for intranet competitions:
* we had a huge response from staff @ Hume City Council re – my cute pet competition- staff emailed their cute pets and we had an image gallery and guess the owner….small prize
* we have started a ‘my favourite cafe or restaurant in Hume’
* also in Spring – gardening tips from staff….Regards, Jenni

Hi James, thank you for this interesting article. However, I have practically used them in our own intranet. And I need more ideas how to drive colleagues to the intranet. Where can I get more ideas for intranet competitions?
