[...] Going even further, why not make the entire Intranet a Wiki? You could always lock down areas that really shouldn’t be changed (legal info, for instance) but for everything else, let your staff build the Intranet that they want. This was actually a thought that senior managers in my own department had themselves, and I know that it’s been suggested many times before (thanks to @whitingx for the link to an article exploring the use of wikis for an intranet).
Great article.

I would also add a third use of Wiki. - As an online delivery format that allows customer feedback and encourages user generated content.

I recently wrote a white paper on Wiki Publishing, which you can find online here.

For an example as Wiki as a delivery format check out docs.webworks.com

@Adam, agree completely. There is no magic solution that says "every staff member can now keep the intranet up to date!".

In practice, we're seeing organisations start to implement a mature mix of governance. Strong management of core central content, and then a lighter touch for more peripheral information. I'd love to see this type of approach explored in many more organisations...

Wiki as Intranet has it's challenges.

There are benefits of direct user contribution -but there needs to be controls around content integrity through accountability (eg. defined business owners for chunks of information).

Maybe the role of a centralised team may change to suit to stronger IA governance - time will tell as we evolve.

Decision supporting content needs to be authorative and have integrity. ie. The impact of poor decisions by C'link staff can be significant.

Hi @Marissa, thanks for the positive feedback. For the record, we write in Australian English, which generally follows UK English conventions (rather than US spelling).

You may be interested in this research project I recently completed with James Matheson and Stewart Mader on how wikis help build community and highly valued new relationships using SNA:
