I've seen ones with extensive content access controls but few with more than 2 or 3 roles (writer/editor (rare)/admin) and none with substantially different interfaces for different roles. The saving grace is often that 'infrequent users' want to get on with their day job and don't care or want to know anything more than the very minimum they need to publish, so you can give them very abbreviated instructions.
