James: Your commitment to this topic is unparallelled. I am not disagreeing with the fact that there is focus that is needed on the intranet. The problem is in seeing it as a destination rather than a journey.

Indeed the concept of the 'intranet' in general is a generation past. What is it? Using the same resources, arranged differently, most of the activities you suggest are needed become irrelevant. The things that the intranet typically deliver should be integrated with the work. There are key online activities in all organizations that individuals have to engage. Even if they are things that otherwise would be stored in enterprise technologies, such as SAP, new front-ends should be developed to seamlessly integrate the work with the messages.

The more static, and less 'living' the thing known as 'the intranet' is, the more the guidelines you offer are critical.

I would suggest that where such actions are needed, therein you find opportunity for better integration with the work.
