Dorje McKinnon has posted about role titles in staff directories. To quote:

Today one of the people I follow on Twitter asked the following question.

@ChristySeason Asking all #intranet tweeps: Does your company publish employees’ titles on your employee directory/look up/phone book?

(It’s a short post, but screenshots are always valuable.)

We launched our new intranet in January with an associate directory that included function but not title. Within the first month, I had multiple requests from throughout the organization for titles. Requests proved the value of the intranet-based associate directory and all the requestors had sound business reasons to overcome HR’s original reluctance to include titles. Nothing like a ground swell of support to get changes made.

  2. @Pam, great example! Titles can often be an important thing in the business culture, and will always be a useful indicator of “who someone is” and “where they fit”. What was HR concerned about in the first place?
