More on our internal knowledge management
Categorised under: Knowledge management
Jeff Potts has posted an excellent comment to my internal blogging post, which asks some questions, and points out some potential issues to consider. I’ll try and answer some of these:
Internal blogging
This has been setup for just our consulting team (3 staff including myself) and our office manager. We are all professional communicators, working on a lot of different projects, with a desire to keep up to date on what’s happening in the business. This should make adoption a lot easier.
We are also actively exploring and experimenting (as a group) on how this can be best used to our advantage, and I’m sure we’ll make many changes as we go.
Other internal KM activities
Now, internal blogging is just one of the many internal KM activities we are working on. As our focus is on innovation, we’ve recognised that knowledge sharing is a key consideration we need to start sorting out now, while we are still in the early phases of growth.
Like any small business, we do what we can within our available resources, but already we’ve put in place the following technologies and approaches:
- Team wiki for collaborative writing, and for easily capturing knowledge.
- A documented after action review process following major projects.
- Time dedicated to having more than one team member work on project proposals and approaches, to allow us to innovate the application of our techniques on every project.
- Support for time spent chatting between team members on issues and ideas.
- Regular “R&D meetings” of a day in length (including flying Donna in from Canberra) set aside just to discuss key issues that need a lot of thought.
- Capturing of key case studies, published to our website.
There’s a lot more to go yet, but it’s a start…
